PREFACE

THE two battles here described, the one a victory, the other a defeat, were such important events in the career of Muhammad at Madina and afford such good illustrations of the value of the mode in which the Qur’an was revealed, — delivered, as Baidawi tells us, ‘According to the circumstances’ — that they are worthy of close and careful study.
